A month ago, almost to the day, I photographed a 3 inch melon growing in the garden. I didn't know if any watermelons would ripen, considering the cold summer. But today I picked this melon, 8 inches round, weighing about 8 pounds, and delicious. What a treat!
It's a bit of a mystery to figure out if watermelons are ripe. You check the tendril growing near the melon and if it's dead, it should indicate ripeness, as does a deep plunk sound when you ping the melon with a finger, and a yellow spot where it rests on the ground. Okay, I did all that with the melon above and it tested ripe; I also thought a second smaller melon was ripe: it had all the right characteristics, but, nope it wasn't ready. oh dear.
