A New Textile: "A Part"
It seemed an intriguing idea to me to take a quarter of a square and fling it off into space where it can dance on the wall apart from its implied origin. As for color, I wanted the large shape to change from blue to violet, and the small square to be a slightly lighter blue to accentuate its floating-off quality. I achieved this by dipping one end of long piece of wool fabric in a pot with blue pigment, and gradually adding more violet while dipping more of the cloth into the pot. Although the transition is not smooth, I hope the jumps and variations in color add texture and life.
In the detail, you can see some of the many hue changes. And below, I hung the work on the yellow wall in the kitchen, and above it the painting Double Curve, which is 6 1/2 x 5 inches. I like the conversation between these works: the curves talking to the straight lines, the reds to the blues and violets, and both speaking of simple shapes.
nice action piece! looks like a magnetic attraction, the smaller piece being drawn right into its slot.
ReplyDeleteThat's great you see it that way, rappel; just what I'd hoped.
ReplyDeleteAltoon, If you only realized how much I look forward to reading your daily message and feast upon your images; be they landscapes around your pastoral home or your latest creation. I save your link to the last after reading the latest news from around the world. Your daily postings ground me and help me focus on the good that is within our own backyards. I'm a farm/pioneer woman at heart and appreciate finding others with a common thread of reason, spirituality and creativity. You definitely help me re-set my path each day.
ReplyDeleteThank you.
