A Walk in the Woods: Mossy Rocks in Vernal Pools
Two weeks ago I drove through Groton State Forest; a thin coating of snow was on the ground and the numerous glacial boulders were bright mounds of moss green above the white. The snow is finally gone and the melting snow and heavy rains have created the temporary shallow ponds of spring, their moisture feeding the soft mosses covering scattered rocks.
Reality becomes confused, as sky comes to earth and rocks become huge land masses.
The grand shapes of rocks are softened by the velvety covering of moss, and their simplicity stands in contrast to the intricate weaving of space, near and far, that we see as we look on and through the pools. Reflections of sky and branches float above the layers of fallen leaves, their color made rich and warm by water.
yes, a magical time of year with all that life seething and oozing and multiplying, dividing and hatching beneath the surfaces...
ReplyDeletewe went for a walk too -- thanks for taking pictures for us -- "reality becomes confused" indeed

it is magical, rappel. And speaking of dividing and hatching, I've been taking pictures of the frog eggs in the pond as they mature.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you got to go for a walk, Stuart, it was such a lovely day, a gift because rain had been predicted.
Just happened onto your blog searching for Artist Conks....adore your art, writing, your walk in the woods and your rituals. Need to explore more of your enchanting world.
