The bumps of the shadow fit nicely between the ridge of the spiral. The viewer is ultimately compelled to carefully take the trip through. Well done.ski holmhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09140309272243462111noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7658518583188826551.post-87272194261061371212011-02-09T07:20:25.290-05:002011-02-09T07:20:25.290-05:00Hannah, the hooked rugs have definitely influenced...Hannah, the hooked rugs have definitely influenced my paintings these last few years, less a jumping off point than a conversation.

and rappel, to enlarge on my response to you, I am still interested in illusion, obviously: the spiral is a round volume, there are planes one in front of another, there are holes.Altoon Sultanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16743040814034732581noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7658518583188826551.post-91013598260437603142011-02-08T23:45:19.539-05:002011-02-08T23:45:19.539-05:00Your desire to have the painting exist in its own ...Your desire to have the painting exist in its own world, without outside reference makes me think of the hooked rugs you've been creating--they too seem to seek that balance of value, hue and shape you're looking for. Are the forms in the rugs a jumping off point for this series? I am loving the painted articulation of the spiral, its lights and darks.Hannahhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09461148136578592965noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7658518583188826551.post-28179750531077584262011-02-08T20:59:36.960-05:002011-02-08T20:59:36.960-05:00thanks so much, Susan.

I then painted the bottom part as a flat area, but that didn't work either; it had no interest or rhythm. Then I ended up with the dark rectangles, which I think work with the vertical green shadowed shape. That was my thinking and working, anyway.Altoon Sultanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16743040814034732581noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7658518583188826551.post-89654322124415366382011-02-08T20:35:57.200-05:002011-02-08T20:35:57.200-05:00thinking of abstraction - but the dark rectangles ...thinking of abstraction - but the dark rectangles at the bottom tie the painting to realism, they're holes, they don't live on the surface with the pipe but are oddly irrelevant to them.... to my eye anyway.rappelhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03569445602513667186noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7658518583188826551.post-78803087908327447102011-02-08T20:29:54.086-05:002011-02-08T20:29:54.086-05:00I really like this one, Altoon.
