The First Frost

The silvery sheen of frost lay on the grass this early morning, a light coating, soon melted. A mist floated above the pond, adding to the loveliness of the moment. In the vegetable garden, only the very tender basil turned black from cold.

The lawn weeds had a delicately etched rim of white surrounding the green, making each distinct and decorative, as beautiful as a bejewelled brooch. The time of quiet, little light, and chill will soon be here, but it brings with it its own pleasures. I so enjoyed a cold rainy day this week – a woodfire warming the house, a book, a pleasant meal – forcing me to stay indoors and pay attention to inner things.

  1. I love this time of year. The first few days gathered into a chair with an afghan, hot cup of tea and a book. Watching the rain fall knowing all is well with my world.

  2. Lisa, this time of year is wonderful, isn't it, with days to be quiet indoors, and some beautiful time outside too.

  3. Love the first photo...so atmospheric. Didn't get the frost here, but I got most of the basil in anyway. Our corn up in Lowell tasseled but didn't make ears...puzzling.

  4. Maggie, I think the corn didn't like the spell of very dry weather in mid summer. My corn didn't produce as many ears as usual.
