A New Textile: "Pale Pink/Yellow Ground"
The color pink has been in the air lately, with people online writing about its challenges; see, for instance this post at the P Farrell Artblog, a call for art using the color pink and eliciting a huge variety of responses. So I decided to try a light pink and yellow for this fourth piece in my figure/ground series. I added a touch of the yellow to the pink to reduce its intensity somewhat, because a bright light pink will tend to take over. When I first did the sketch for this piece, the points of the triangles at top were more aligned, giving the pink shape more of the look of a vessel. I thought this would make that shape too prominent, so I lowered the right triangle, making it move more aggressively into the pink. I think the shapes are fairly evenly balanced, so that your eye moves from the yellow shapes to the pink and back and forth, without either taking center stage, but maybe to you the balance is not quite as successful. As always, you can let me know.
Above is a detail of the piece, and below the four completed works in the figure/ground series. Looking at them together, I think the Red/Blue triangles are most successful in the back and forth vying for attention, but this may be because all the shapes are triangular, making it easier for them to share the space. I'm going to leave this series for now to work on other ideas, but I will come back to it, as I find the concept both fun and challenging.

ReplyDeletethanks so much, Jan. I also enjoyed seeing your work on the website; it's full of life and energy.
ReplyDeleteto me this reads as a pink shape on top of a yellow background - but that doesn't make it any less beautiful!
ReplyDeleterappel, I had a feeling that this one might read as a pink positive form, but I'm happy you like it.
ReplyDeleteNever got to comment on these earlier, but again, as with earlier ruglets, they look so nice together.
