Shine, egg tempera on calfskin parchment, 5 x 7 3/4 in.
It might have seemed, after my last painting, Candy Stripes (which you can see here), that I was headed in a very abstract direction. Nope. I still love playing with the illusion of form; I love the idea of going back and forth with different kinds of images. In this painting the strong yellow vertical and horizontal sets the stage for the curves of shiny black and the reflective backdrop.
Shine, detail
I don't often aim to express surface qualities, but I couldn't resist the sparkle of this subject, bringing animation to manufactured materials.
Beautiful piece! The reflected light from the fence is wonderful!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much, Rob.
DeleteI would have cropped the top of the yellow pipe. Upon second consideration, I think you got it right.
ReplyDeleteI guess if I wanted to make it more abstract, I would have chopped off the top of that pipe; it would have flattened the space and made it much more ambiguous. But I guess I wasn't going for that in this piece.
Deletelovely...the hues, texture, reflection...the pipe is especially impressive; how you managed to capture its sinuous rigidity as it curves around the yellow (such a gorgeous yellow!) pole.
ReplyDeleteThank you, vygieblog; the black cylinders are hoses, so curving is in their nature.
DeleteA perfect painting: color and composition seem as though you could not add or subtract a thing without upsetting the balance. Feels like a "summer" scene to me; I think perhaps the colors. Something cool and refreshing about it.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Linda. Several people have commented that this painting seems summery to them. It's not what I was thinking about, but it's nice that it gives that feeling.
