Glancing Light

The sun is lower at this time of year, the light angled, as though conspiring with the brilliant colors to make the most of their brief time of glory. The light picks out details, makes color translucent, as it dances in front of dark.

The edges of forms are illumined, making fluid lines in space.

Trunks are massed darks, making the contrast of colored woods that much more startling.

The sparkle of multi colored leaves and ferns is so much more intense than in the brighter, overall light of summer.

Highlights are picked out with great precision....

.....and long shadows add drama to vividly carpeted paths.

On a mid-morning in fall, wisps of fog hover over hills, the light is clear and raking, its shadows deep. Before slipping into its winter sleep, the plant kingdom is ablaze, a last ecstatic shout before the quiet of winter.

  4. Thank you for the NE tour. Wondering how our late, cold, very wet Spring followed by drought will affect our Midwestern fall colors.

    1. We had a wet summer here, less so the past couple of weeks. The foliage season wasn't as bright as usual, with many leaves just browning at their edges, turning a orangey-brown. Still beautiful, though.

    1. Thanks Amy, but this is conceived and developed specifically as a blog, available for browsing by anyone at any time, for free. I save all my images in low resolution, for online viewing, and not for print.
