A New Painting: "Points"

Points, egg tempera on calfskin parchment, 8 1/2 x 7 in.

After the cool simplicity of my last painting––Bar and Shadow, which you can see here––Points is quite boisterous with its multiple shapes of intense color and its layering of space. It almost has an air of a cubist composition. I like trying this and that, finding different kinds of compositional structures. I don't like to repeat myself, though I sometimes think (rarely, actually) that my work might be better if I focused like a laser.....but it's just not in my artistic character at this point in my life.

  1. This is a macro of points and shadows. Nice.

  2. The colors are rich and deep. The points are interesting too. A mix of motion and stillness, hardness and softness because of the rounded points. This turned out very well.

I picked up too on that last sentence-about focusing. I suspect it's possible to miss something if you are too intent on any one thing.

  3. "...at these points in my life...."

  4. Thanks, Libby and JBS; I'm pleased you like the colors of this painting.
As for one thing...for instance there's Morandi, a narrowly focused great painter.

    1. You are right there! Morandi was rather singular:)

  5. I like the colors. The image suggests to me that something is about to happen, as if I'm peering into the workings of a clock caught in the act. On the other hand, the detail seems still, something pointed out, and settled.

    1. Thanks James. I like the idea of a sense of something about to start, yet still.

  6. The energy on this work is very vibrant! It seems to me you ARE focused like a laser. And thus does not remind me of Morandi, in its focus, though I recall we are both big Morandi fans. And, I think you two are both creating constructs in contexts that are minimalized so you can control and explore your focus.

    1. Thank you, Julie. This doesn't remind me of Morandi either, since he was working with narrowly defined formats. My constructs are somewhat narrow in my paintings, but I was also thinking of all the other mediums and formats I work with.
