"Roundabout" in Progress

Even though I was thinking of pottery when I did the drawing for this ruglet diptych, it looks closer to Philip Guston's light bulb, a rounded shape with a touch of the comic. The varied colors of the spot dyed orange-ish cloth meander giddily across the surface, held in by the rational lines of background.

  1. I'm loving it! You know, when I first looked at it, I thought it might be a pregnant woman's stomach. Silly me!

  2. Well, I could see all kinds of comic things in this, but also I can see the outline of two vases -a green footed one on the left and a bulb shaped one on the right. Also, even though the green is smooth, I can see a small repeated pattern in each place where one strand of fabric ends and another is begun. What is the number of your mesh? It looks pretty small.

  3. Pregnant woman's stomach is ok too; there's something fleshy about the shape, Or two vases. I'm fine with not having it pinned down.

I generally cut my fabric with a #6 cutter head, which makes a 6/32––3/16––inch wide strip of fabric. The linen backing doesn't come in mesh sizes, but linen is used for #6 and larger; for thinner strips, people use monk's cloth, I think. The panel above is 10 x 8 inches, to give you an idea of scale.

  4. I think it looks like a veggie; a gourd perhaps. And frankly, Guston's lightbulb looks like a big radish. But I think this is just a highly personal foible on my part!
